Measuring intangible qualities, such as generosity, is no easy task. , the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) – a British third-sector organisation represented in Brazil by the IDIS (Institute for the Development of Social Investment) – has decided to take on this challenge and is compiling, Since 2010, the World Giving Index (WGI).
Based on three basic questions put to a sample of the population in various countries, they are able to gauge how generous a population is. The questions that CAF believes can capture this complex quality are:
Have you done any of these things in the last month?
1. Have you helped a stranger, or someone you didn’t know, who needed help?
2. Have you donated money to any charity?
3. Have you done any voluntary work for an organisation?
In this way, CAF is able to measure the generosity based on three fundamental pillars: altruism, giving and volunteering. Based on the simple average calculated from the positive responses given by people, they are able to assign a percentage score to each country and, in doing so, rank them. It is a straightforward approach that analyses acts of generosity without giving greater weight to any one of its pillars.
Brazil plummeted in the 2018 ranking
As stated by IDIS in its article on the 2018 ranking, Brazil plummeted from 75th to 122nd place that year, reaching its worst position in the history of the survey.
Not only that: Brazil’s performance deteriorated across all three indices measured by the survey, such as This can be seen below in the report published by IDIS.
The 2018 World Solidarity Ranking
The top 10 in the World Solidarity Ranking includes several Anglo-Saxon countries: Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Ireland and the United Kingdom Together, they occupy, in that order, 2nd to 6th place in the 2018 survey.
Indonesia took the top spot, claiming this position for the first time after several years of Myanmar’s leadership. The big surprise, however, was Kenya, which occupies 8th place and proves that solidarity need not be practised solely by wealthy people and countries.
