Around 90 members of the British community gathered on Saturday 11 April, at St Paul’s School to take part in the British Society Barbecue. The event, which was traditionally organised by the former Royal British Legion, was held for the first time under the new structure, in which the RBL has been incorporated into the British Charitable Foundation.

With the same aim of strengthening the bonds and traditions of the British community, the event was a great success! People of all ages took part in the celebration – from the elderly to the young Scouts of the Carajás group. Among those present were also the headmaster of St Paul’s School, Mr Titus Edge, and the Chairman of the British Society and the British Charitable Foundation, Mr Andrew Greenlees.

“Everyone made the most of the opportunity to interact with the community and, thanks to the school’s generosity, enjoyed the excellent food and drink on offer,” said Derek Barnes, one of the event’s organisers. As well as the barbecue, the event featured a sale of second-hand books in English and a fun raffle with prizes such as a bottle of port and a box of chocolates, amongst others. “A successful event is one where good food serves as an excuse to socialise and create happy memories. Ours was exactly that: a moment of togetherness and great joy!”, said Anne Speyer.

The British Society would like to thank St Paul’s School for its sponsorship and the Carajás group for their support in organising the barbecue. The funds raised from ticket sales will be donated to the British Charitable Foundation and the St Paul’s Foundation. The next barbecue is planned for September. “I am sure this was the first of many events that will bring the British community together to promote the well-being of all,” said Andrew Greenless, chair of the FBB.
