The Queen’s Birthday: a charity event organised by the British Society

 

On Thursday 21 June, the British Society São Paulo held a charity event in aid of the British Foundation. The Queen’s Birthday Party is the main event for the British community worldwide and marks the day when all its members come together to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday.

In England, it is celebrated with a military parade known as ‘Trooping the Colour’, followed by a review of the troops by Queen Elizabeth II herself. This parade usually takes place on the second Saturday in June, and the British community living in other countries organises their own celebrations in honour of the Queen in the days that followed.

The Queen’s Birthday in Brazil

In Brazil, this celebration has been held annually for the past for decades, by the British Society São Paulo, usually at the Centro Brasileiro Britânico, the Cultura Inglesa building in Pinheiros, where our administrative headquarters are located.

Among the guests are the leaders of the various organisations that make up the British community in São Paulo, representing not only the diplomatic corps but also the fields of education, commerce, tourism, the third sector and leisure. Also in attendance are numerous expatriates from the Commonwealth, as well as people of British descent who have family ties to the United Kingdom and still cherish their traditions.

The event is a charity fundraiser, with all proceeds going to social projects supporting the elderly.

In this way, the British community makes the most of its main event of the year to do a good deed and donate funds so that we can improve the work we do for our elderly people. It is a way of giving back to those who have already done so much for us, and also to the country that welcomed their ancestors so warmly.

The Queen’s Birthday 2018

This year, the party was attended by around 220 guests, who took the opportunity during the cocktail reception to catch up with old friends and Catching up on old times. As well as the food and drink, which were delicious, we also had a charity raffle during the evening and speeches by the Chairman of the British Charitable Foundation, Michael Betenson, and the representative of the British Consulate-General in São Paulo, George Sherriff. Finally, the evening would not have been complete without a performance of ‘God Save the Queen’, the British national anthem, and also our Brazilian national anthem.

Thanks to our sponsors and the efforts of the British community, we managed to raise R$50,000 on the Queen’s Birthday, money which will help fund some new activities in our social programme during the second half of the year.
