To round off our content on giving this November, what better way than to talk about Giving Day itself, which takes place every year across the globe.

The organisers, who are part of the Movement for a Culture of Giving, define Giving Day (or #DiaDeDoar) as “a major campaign to promote a culture of giving in Brazil and around the world. We are a movement, a national mobilisation that promotes a more generous and supportive country, particularly towards civil society organisations".

The origins of Giving Day

Giving Day originated in the United States in 2012, under the name Giving Tuesday, and was created by two New York-based organisations: the United Nations Foundation, which supports UN projects, and the 92nd Street Y, a cultural and community centre in the city. It always takes place on the first Tuesday after Black Friday and is linked both to that event and to Thanksgiving, a major American public holiday.

In Brazil, the campaign was held for the first time in 2013, just one year after its launch. It is organised by ABCR – the Brazilian Association of Fundraisers and Umbigo do Mundo Strategic Communication, and is supported by the Agency Benjamin. These organisations prepare everything and provide a range of materials for Brazilian NGOs to use in their communications.

The ‘Dia de Doar’ logo shown in the image above, for example, was created by them and made available for us to use free of charge in our campaign.

Dia de Doar 2019

In 2019, Giving Day will be held on 3 December, the first Tuesday of the month. On this day, hundreds of organisations will be in full swing, ready to receive donations, and hoping that millions of Brazilians will get involved and contribute to an NGO or cause of their choice.

We at the British Foundation are asking for your donation on this day. We’d also like you to invite your friends to donate and help us spread the word about the campaign to more people. The more people who get involved, the better!

Every day is a day to give. But once a year, it’s a day to celebrate giving. Those with a heart give; those who give make a difference. That’s the #Day of Giving!
