The elderly people who took part in the initial phase of the Cuidar Programme, launched in February 2017, attended more than 200 medical appointments and clinical examinations, accompanied by professional carers provided by the British Charitable Foundation.

During this period, when the Cuidar Programme was offered on a trial basis to 35 older people linked to the FBB, we were able to validate both the scope and the operation of the Programme, and we observed its great potential to have a positive impact on the quality of life of its beneficiaries.

How does the Cuidar programme work?

For those unfamiliar with it, the Cuidar Programme provides support for older people attending medical appointments, both for preventive care and for the treatment of common illnesses, and involves mobilising a team of carers who assist them with the necessary arrangements relating to travel and medical appointments. These professionals also provide us with a report upon their return, so that we can update the medical status of the elderly person receiving care and take action where necessary.

This programme came about when the British Foundation team realised that many elderly people were neglecting their health because they had no one to accompany them to the doctor, and we saw the potential to have a positive impact on their lives through a very simple project. For this reason, we consider the ‘Cuidar’ Programme to be the Foundation’s programme with the greatest potential and scope.

Will the ‘Cuidar’ Programme continue?

Having trialled the programme throughout the year and confirmed its effectiveness, we want to expand the Cuidar Programme in 2018. Initially, we want to roll it out in the public care home that we support through the Multiplicar Programme, expanding the support offered to them and contributing even further to ensuring that their elderly residents can lead dignified and healthy lives. Following this, our aim is to expand the programme to other public care homes in São Paulo to increase our positive impact on society.

To do this, we need donors, as our current budget does not allow for the programme’s expansion. If you’d like to contribute, simply visit our Donations page and register to support us with this project. If you have any questions or suggestions regarding how it works, please send us a message via our Contact page and we’ll be happy to reply.
